Revolt #8 – Saturday 7th March

December 9, 2014 Leave a comment

Thanks to everyone who came to our November event, and to everyone who performed! It’s amazing to be able to host such a cool night, so it really means a lot to have the support of so many cool people, both from Coventry and further afield.

We’ve got loads of things to share from Revolt #7 still, including a video of the night created by Seth Corbin, some really creative contributions to our next zine, and a lot of awesome photos.

All of that will be coming to this website soon (along with a digital copy of Revolt Zine #3), but in the meanwhile, here’s a sneak peak of some of the things you’ll be seeing at our next event, which will take place in the Coal Vaults on Saturday 7th March

LIINES

LIINES – Last seen gracing the Revolt stage as (hooker) prior to a name change at the beginning of 2013, L//NES will make you want to move your body and shout along like no-one else. This bass-driven Manchester band have toured Europe, supported the likes of Gossip and Le Tigre…and now they’re coming back to Coventry to rock your socks off.

THE ETHICAL DEBATING SOCIETY – jerky, shouty riot grrrl from London, with unstoppable beats, boy/girl vocal interplay and a mission to get you to do it too.

Big Joanie

Big Joanie

BIG JOANIE – Black feminist sistah punk from London, playing stripped-down, lo-fi rock. Totally sold a tote bag to Laverne Cox.

DJ WESTENRA – Leamington Spa’s hottest new DJ – the woman behind the decks at local feminist club night Can’t Touch This.

DANNI – local poetry spoken word from a ranty lefty queer.

Plus! As ever, soooo much more…

Revolt #7 – Saturday 29th November

September 16, 2014 1 comment

We’re back – and what a line-up we have for you! As usual, we’ll have a mix of incredible bands, DJs, spoken-word acts and stalls at The Coal Vaults in Coventry, including…

The Tuts

The Tuts – photo by WildBlanket Photography

THE TUTS –  a sassy all-girl punk band with pop sensibilities, hailing from West London. Last year they were hand-picked to tour with Kate Nash, this summer they played Glastonbury’s Left Field stage, and this November…they’re coming to Coventry!

DIRTYriot grrrl meets noise rock. This Gloucestershire trio like horrible riffs, Divine, glitter and phallic imagery.

NOT RIGHT – basically the Revolt house band at this point, angry/earnest/joyous. Expect lipstick-smeared bodies and overexcited feminist sloganeering.

THE PASSÉISTS – exciting new local group featuring members of Revolt alumni Bad Vibes and My Therapist Says Hot Damn.

Eleanor Lisney - photo by Ann Galpin

Eleanor Lisney – photo by Ann Galpin

ELEANOR LISNEY – reading poetry composed in varied stages of her life, mostly from the perspective of a disabled woman in exile, from memories culled from childhood in Malaysia or as young expat wife living in France.

SOPHIE HADLUM – at our last event, Sophie delighted us with strange tales of the forest and sarcastic feminist puppetry. So we invited her back…

SOPHIE SPARHAM – the second Sophie on our line-up is a sci-fi/ fantasy writer, poet and has a show on TotalRock Radio. Her poetry aims to inspire and comment on the world around us.

DJ J355 – another welcome return to Revolt, spinning grrrl tunes between bands.

ALIEN SHE – spinning female-fronted indie and alternative rock to get you dancing after the bands!

Plus, as always, we’ll have the usual range of zine stalls, the chance for you to help make the next Revolt zine, and the Revolt Feminist Library will be present.

Tickets will cost £5 on the door or £3 in advance, with advance tickets available soon.

DRAG

What happens when two club nights collide?

REVOLT vs CATHARSIS is a genre-bending, one-off meeting of Coventry’s friendliest alternative events. Featuring live bands, DJs, distros and more…

DRAG blew us away when they played Revolt #3 – they’ll be back with new songs from their debut album, Neurotica: A Compendium of Tales Regarding Body & Mind.

Dark romantic band Last July were really excited by the idea of Revolt vs Catharsis – and we’re excited to have them! They’ve toured both nationally and in Europe, and have a new album due out later this year.

Legendary zine creator Karren Ablaze! produced Ablaze! from 1987 to 1993, and later fronted the awesome riot grrrl bands Coping Saw and Wack Cat. She’ll be reading from her great new book, The City Is Ablaze!

anarchistwood

anarchistwood

anarchistwood have to be seen to be believed. They played the very first Revolt and we’re super-hyped to have them back. Sitting somewhere between surreal performance art and a punk rock show, they’ve done something completely different every time we’ve seen them. And that’s what we love about them.

You may have seen Zoe Kristensen DJing at Revolt in the past – this time, she’s back to regale you with alliterative, cynical, sometimes scientific poetic ramblings.

Plus!

Zines and more from the Revolt! distro, including the launch of our second zine

Catharsis DJs

Art display from Babes In Horrorland

…and so much more…

As usual, the event will take place in the Coal Vaults in Coventry. Tickets will be available on the door and in advance. This is a non-profit, DIY event and is happening because we love to make awesome things happen. All proceeds go towards covering costs.

Both Revolt and Catharsis are intended to be a safe, welcoming events, and we take a zero-tolerance approach to any sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist behaviour etc.

Revolt #5 – second announcement

January 22, 2014 Leave a comment

With a month to go until our next event on Saturday 22nd February, we’re pleased to announce a whole load of cool stuff…
Bad VibesRounding off the band line-up are Bad Vibes, who a whole load of people wanted to see again after a great debut set at the last Revolt. So, we’ve invited them back!

We’ve also confirmed a couple of fantastic spoken word acts. Jo Johnson will be travelling down from Leeds to deliver a fiery collection of political poems. Megan Dodds will be making her second appearance at Revolt, following a powerfully moving performance back at the beginning of 2013. We’re also hoping to have a speaker from Reclaim The Night Coventry, which will be taking place on Saturday 1st March.

Finally, we’re delighted to announce the return of the Possessed to Print patch stall and zine library. If you attended our November 2013 event, you definitely won’t have missed their awesome DIY riot grrrl and punk patches!

We’ll have advance tickets on sale soon, so keep checking back for updates!

Reflecting on the November event

November 13, 2013 Leave a comment

We had another wonderful event at the beginning of November – thanks to My Therapist Says Hot Damn, Jesus and his Judgemental Father, Bad Vibes, A Year From Now, Kat Gupta and Revolting Words open mic for their amazing sets, Megan and Tom for their wonderful patch/zine stall, and everyone who came to party in a positive way with us.

We’ve had a bit of feedback from both attendees and from materials left at the zine table which we’ll totally be taking on board for future events. It really matters to us that Revolt is accessible and safe for all. If you have any concerns about anything that happens at our events, please do let us know.

The next Revolt will take place on SATURDAY 22ND FEBRUARY, once again in the Coal Vaults.

We’ll have a DJ set from the incredible Ruby Please, a stall hosted by Robot Unicorn Records, plus Megan and Tom will be back with their punk patch/zine stall. Plus, some really fantastic bands and spoken word – more on that soon.

At this event we’ll be distributing the first ever Revolt Zine – pieced together from some of the fantastic/fun/powerful pieces of art, doodling and prose people contributed on 2nd November.

We’ll see you in February!

REVOLT #4 – first announcement!

September 6, 2013 Leave a comment

The next Revolt will take place in Taylor John’s House on Saturday 2nd November. And what a line-up we have for you…

To open the night, we’re teaming up with with LGBTQ Open Mic as part of Coventry Peace Festival:

An ultra-chilled, ultra-welcoming opportunity to test out new poetry or wow us with your tried and tested best.  The LGBTQ spoken word open mic runs from 6pm – 7.30pm – expect a vibe that is supportive, exploratory and occasionally rough around the edges.

We’ll also have performances from a whole host of other live acts…

My Therapist Says Hot Damn

My Therapist Says Hot Damn

Don’t let the friendly faces fool you. Whilst this lovely punk five-piece from London are avowedly “mum-friendly”, they’re also capable of creating an almighty racket. They went down a storm at LaDIYfest Berlin this summer, and we can’t wait to welcome them to Coventry!

Jesus & His Judgemental Father (acoustic)
A stripped-down set from Leed’s finest. If you’ve ever wondered what would happen when a riot grrrl politic and aesthetic are filtered through the pop-punk stylings of Blink-182 or No Doubt, now’s your chance to find out.

A Year From Now

A Year From Now

Bad Vibes
A shiny new riot grrrl band from Coventry, featuring former members of Revolt veterans Parataxis. This is likely to be their first gig, and it’s gonna be awesome.

A Year From Now
Pop-punk from Warwickshire, and a lot of fun with that. A Year From Now made quite an impression at the University of Warwick Battle of the Bands this year – we’re looking forward to seeing them again!

Kat Gupta
Moving spoken-word pieces. Kat is a person of many talents: a feminist scholar, LGBTQ activist and blogger. They’ve also been honing their performance skills this summer with Lashings of Ginger Beer Time at the Edinburgh Fringe…

Plus! more to be announced.

May 6, 2013 Leave a comment

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s post, we’re delighted to announce the final band for Revolt on Saturday 15th June – Cornish rockers Honey! This three-piece craft noisy, catchy, grungy tunes and put on a really exciting live show, so we can’t wait for them to play at Taylor John’s!
